This year’s budget, adopted in July, made a cut of $25,000 from holiday lighting outside the Civic Center due to declining City reserves and revenue. At the urging of the Mission Viejo Activities Committee, the money was restored by the Council last week.
Last year the Activities Committee, a private organization, moved Santa’s Workshop to Civic Plaza from its traditional location at the intersection of LaPaz and Chrisanta. Spokeman Dave Breazeale appeared at the last two council meetings to express concern about attendance at the Workshop if the pear trees at the Civc Center were not lit.

I believe $25,000.00 would better serve the total community with road repair and re slurring coating our streets than sending the money to Southern California Edison.
A special thank you to the Mayor and ALL 4 COUNCIL MEMBERS for restoring the Holiday Lighting budget!
[Editor's Note: The vote was 4-0, with Councilman MacLean absent.]
Even though the money could be spent elsewhere, it is the kids safety that the lighting really helps. There are so many in attendance that it brings the up the peoples spirits in this economic time. I am sure the Activities Committee have eliminated other items in order to maintain the high expectations of the community. My sincere appreciation for all the hard work this Activities Committees accomplishes.
