The City will conduct a free tribute to Veterans Wednesday beginning at 2 pm at the Murray Community Center Memorial Wall. The ceremony will commence with an invocation by Reverend Tom Tyree, American Legion Post 862. He will be followed by a Marine Color Guard.
Congressman Gary Miller will give the opening remarks, followd by U.S. Marine Corps Colonel Michael S. Groen, Commander of Mission Viejo’s adopted Headquarters Battalion First Marine Division. The Veterans of Foreign War Post 6024 will present the rifle salute.
American Heroes Tribute banners will be displayed to honor Mission Viejo residents who gave their lives in service to the country.
The Marine Adoption Committee will accept donations for the purchase of T-shirts and hats before and after the ceremony.
Following the free session, residents may stay for a musical segment at 3:30 which will feature great songs that inspired the growth of the nation. It is billed as an educational music program with songs such as “Yankee Doodle,” “The Star Spangled Banner,” “America the Beautiful,” and “God Bless America,” among others. It will be conducted in the Syamore room at the Murray Center.
Neither freedom nor patriotic songs are free, evidently, and the City budget is tight, so plan to pay $5 for the music unless you’re a Vet.
