The Capistrano Valley High Marching Band won the State Championship for its Division on Saturday in San Bernardino.
The band’s performance incorporated “The Music of Carmen” as its theme, featuring a spirited presentation of Bizet’s operatic masterpiece. The romantic exploits of Carmen, and her fiery temper, led a jealous lover to murder her. The ten members of the group’s Color Guard dressed as Carmen, wearing flowing red dresses and red roses in their hair, as shown in the above photo.
It was the second State Championship in the last four years for the school and Instrumental Music Director Andy Waldukat. Under his direction the band also won this year’s Sweepstakes awards in the technical categories of High Music, High Effect and High Visual.
“I will never forget the look of pride on each of the students’ faces on the return trip home,” said Waldukat. “I have personally witnessed first hand the struggles these students go through each season, overcoming fatigue at practice, learning difficult music, and having to integrate the music and movement with 65 other people on the field at the same time.”
