Sculpture awaits placement in Garden

A metal sculpture designed by de Portola Elementary students is being unveiled Tuesday morning at 9:15 a.m. in the School’s Patriot Garden. Local artists crafted the 7-ft art piece.

“Our Patriot Garden has been such a wonderful place for our students to learn about ecology, science and the Earth,” said Principal Tom Turner. “Now, with the installation of this amazing sculpture, they are also going to learn about and appreciate art.”

The design by students Owen, Lucas and Liam Fellows was chosen in a school-sponsored contest. The proposals were to be based on a famous educational or environmental quote. The winning entry’s quote was from Henry Wadworth Longfellow:

“Kind hearts are the gardens, kind thoughts are the roots, kind words are the flowers, kind deeds are the fruits. Take care of your garden and keep out the weeds. Fill it with sunshine, kind words and kind deeds.”

Funding was provided by the Canyon Crest Garden Club of Mission Viejo and a grant from the Creative Arts Production Foundation’s Fun With Chalk Festivals. Members of the Club and Fun With Chalk founder Frank Lieberman are scheduled to be at the unveiling.

The sculpture is dedicated to the memory of former school mom Amy Inoue who was instrumental in the development of de Portola’s Patriot Garden.

Congratulations to de Portola, our principal Tom Turner and the Fellows family!

The Patriot Garden is an inspiration and would not be possible without our wonderful volunteers.

We feel blessed to be a part of such an amazing school! Go Patriots!
