Mervyn’s Will Become LA Fitness

by MissionViejoDispatch.com on January 28, 2010

Mervyns 160   The  former  Mervyn’s Store on Alicia, across the street from Target, will become a LA Fitness Center. The new lease extends for 15 years.

Watt Companies says it will renovate the entire 5 acre Alicia Towne Center in conjunction with the LA Fitness lease.

So Cal District Manager Cutter Chanley says the location will open within 6 months after pre-sales of memberships begins, which hasn’t yet been scheduled. The pre-sales period will offer discounted memberships which are good at other area locations until the new facility opens.

Nice to see a gym coming to that side of Mission Viejo and fill in the vacancy in a very visible location that reflects the economy of our city right at Alicia and the 5. Having a big box store vacancy doesn’t look good. LA Fitness sure is a lot better than a temp Halloween store!

When and where will pre-sale memberships begin?

[Editor's Note: LA Fitness hasn't scheduled pre-sales yet.]

Whole Foods would be a lot better!

They won’t take the whole store, something else will end in the rest of the space. I will say LA Fitness generally does a better job of keeping up their facilities. I have been waiting for a location off the freeway in this area for years.

Nice to have another gym option next to my home. The other LA fitness is too far. I for one, am excited!

This would be a nice addition to the LA Fitness locations in Orange County. I’ve been going to the Lake Forest location for the last 3-4 years, 3 times a week, and more and more I’ve found it to be less maintained. The racquetball courts need to be refurbished and the men’s showers need to be cleaned up. Last month it took them almost 3 weeks to replace a lighting ballast and actually on 3 occassions in the last 30 days, they did not have any shower gel in any of the shower stalls. I hope this new location will be better maintained and managed.

I just signed up. And yes they will be taking up the whole store.

There will be a full size basketball court. a swimming pool, spa, saunas the only thing this one won’t have that its largest club has is Tennis Courts.

When is the day LA Fitness will open?

[Editor's Note: In about 2 months, depending on construction. Pre-opening membership deals are available at the Preview Office on the corner of Alicia and Charlinda. (949) 421-6082]

If Lance MacLean is still in town he will finally get his wish – a full size basketball court in Mission Viejo that is not costing our taxpayers one dime. If there is a demand the private sector is fully capable of providing the solution.

Kudos to LA Fitness.
