The Capo School District has announced the initiation of the search and selection process for a new Superintendent. The firm of Hazard, Young, Attea Associates, based in Glenview, Illinois, will assist in the process.
The undertaking will begin by creating a desired profile for the new Superintendent. This will be done, in part, by obtaining Leadership Profile forms from CUSD parents and other “stakeholders.” Public Input Forums will be held next Tuesday from 7:30-8:30 p.m. at Los Flores School in Rancho Santa Margarita and the CUSD Board Room in San Juan Capistrano.
The plan is to select a finalist before the end of May, so the new Superintendent could take office before August. Following is the schedule for selecting the new Superintendent:

This position, as with any similar position of public trust (e.g., City Manager), ought to be “at will” (as are most private jobs). That means that the Superintendent serves at the pleasure of the Board, and can be asked to resign at any time, at the Board’s sole pleasure, and, conversely can submit their resignation at any time, at their sole pleasure.
The contract could include a period of notice (say, one month in either direction – Superintendent-initiated or Board-initiated) to allow for transition planning.
I do not approve of these six figure “golden parachutes” in the public sector. And, in this economy, I am pretty sure that the Board can find someone to take this position on an “at will” basis.
About time! I hope that CUSD can find a candidate that cares more about the children in that district than about himself/herself. Suggestion….look beneath the exterior and don’t accept less than what the qualifications dictate. CUSD could use some good administration after all of the private agendas they have had to contend with. Good luck!
