Haiti: Helicopter Evacuates MV Christian Church Group

by MissionViejoDispatch.com on January 16, 2010

The group of Mission Viejo volunteers in Haiti has been airlifted out of the Maison de Lumiere Orphanage compound in Port-au-Prince.  The 10 people were taken by helicopter last night (Fri) to a secure area near the airport. This morning they flew to Santo Domingo in the Domincian Republic. They will then travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico for a flight to Miami, where they will catch a plane to Orange County tomorrow (Sunday).

The husband of one of the lay missionaries is a partner in Deloitte, a major international accounting firm. The helicopter was arranged by Deloitte to evacuate its employees as well as the group from Mission Viejo Christian Church, according to the Register.  The group had become desperate to get out after encountering hostile attitudes from Haitians.

Update: One member of the group, Robert Taylor, elected to stay at the orphanage, so 9 were evacuated on the helicopter.
