Crown Valley Sequel? City May Widen Both Oso and LaPaz Simultaneously

by MissionViejoDispatch.com on March 2, 2009

At Monday’s council meeting Lance MacLean admitted the City’s project management was “a joke” while taking “3 1/2 to 4 years” to complete the projected two-year Crown Valley widening.  It is currently scheduled to be finished at the end of May.

Some wonder if a sequel to the nightmare may be in the offing.  Last night a report to the council stated the widening of both LaPaz and Oso could begin at the end of 2009.  Oso will be widened from three to four lanes in each direction.  LaPaz will be widened to three lanes in each direction between Muirlands and Chrisanta

The city has four primary arterial roads to and from the I-Freeway:  Alicia, LaPaz, Oso and Crown Valley.  The natural question is why the City would widen the two central corridors, LaPaz and Oso, simultaneously, thereby reducing the mitigation each street might provide while the other is disabled.

A traffic consultant recently advised substantially more traffic relief could be created without widening the parkways if modern roundabout intersections were installed.  The Council and City Staff oppose the idea, but a Roundabout Committee led by Councilwoman Schlicht is meeting for 90 days to further explore the concept.

Let me understand this….now the city will impact the various businesses on both La Paz and Oso at the same time? I believe the bungling of the widening of Crown Valley should concern these businesses. It could send these businesses to either the bankruptcy court or to RSM to set up business.

Lance Maclean while grandstanding at the council meeting Monday night—should look at his own navel on this Crown Valley fiasco. He has had three years to comment or intercede, but he has failed to do so. Now that the recall papers have been filed MacLean has finally woken up?

I am hopeful that it will not be a duplication of the CVP botched job! But I am not holding my breath. These things the council NEEDS to pay attention to, unless a screwed up major business area and street IS good for the city’s image and tax base?

I didn’t think the council could screw up any worse than it already had – I was wrong!

God help us in the event of an emergency-having both Oso and La Paz undergoing construction projects at the same time. What can they be thinking? Not much I’m afraid. Let’s rally and stop this potential diaster.

Oso Pkwy between Marguerite Pkwy and I-5 needs serious repair. The pavement on the inside lane has been uneven for YEARS. Why does it take Mission Viejo so much time to solve priorities? I’m confused by the decision to spend $300-400k on a parade float. A Rose Parade float was NOT a priority, especially in 2008.

Before El Toro Rd was repaired and improved, Mission Viejo ignored for years (a decade?), large rat infestations in a vacant K-mart and movie theater. Why are we amazed at the amount of time Crown Valley has been under construction?

Residents need to focus on the efforts of the Council, and we need to make sure that infrastructure is prioritized before marketing & advertising at a parade. Duh.
