Cathy Schlicht Proposes Revolving Door Ordinance

by MissionViejoDispatch.com on September 3, 2010

Cathy Schlicht is proposing an ordinance to prohibit former elected officials, commissioners and high level city employees from conducting business with the city for at least a year after leaving office.

Known as “Revolving Door Ordinances,” such actions are intended to prevent wealthy special interests from retaining the services of former ‘insiders’ to gain undue influence with local government. It also seeks to prevent former city officials, elected and non-elected, from immediately enriching themselves by exploiting their insider knowledge and relationships with the city.

Schlicht’s proposal asks the Council on Tuesday to direct the City Attorney to review the Revolving Door Ordinances adopted by other cities and draft a similar measure suitable for the City of Mission Viejo. She included with the agenda item a copy of the City of San Jose’s ordinance as an example.

Good for Cathy. It’ll be interesting to see how many of the current self-serving council members vote in favor. I hope city residents will take note of members who don’t support it vote them out in November. One reason I’m going to vote for Bill Barker is because he supports term limits and also life time term limits. A person can only serve two terms in their life. That should help bring back some honesty and integrity.
