It’s been six weeks since 10 people ventured out to the Norman P Murray Community Center in hopes of becoming the next Jerry Seinfeld. During that time, they’ve learned basic joke writing skills, stage technique, and how to hopefully handle stage fright and hecklers. On Friday, August 27th, they get to show their friends, family and the world just how funny they’ve become. It’s the first “Students of Stand-up” Comedy Graduation Showcase being held in Mission Viejo.
The beginning comedy class is taught by veteran stand-up comedian and longtime Mission Viejo resident Tom Riehl, who has worked with the likes of Bob Saget, Paula Poundstone, Alonzo Bodden, Shawn Wayans, and James P. Connolly as well as musical acts Berlin, Three Dog Night and David Pack of Ambrosia. He was also a winner on ABC’s America’s Funniest People” and host of the cooking show “Food Rules”.
“When I see these people walk into class for the first time, I immediately remember how I felt when I first started,” said Riehl. “They really deserve a lot of credit for sticking it out and doing something most people would never even consider.”
Graduating performers in the August 27 show are Tammy Descoteaux, Margot Ferron, D. Carole Goodman, Michael Hess, Torey Mang, Robby Millsap, Allan Pilger, Alex Poff, Jordan Sandfer, and Dennis St. Pierre. While none of the students have ever performed stand-up before, Riehl is convinced people will be surprised at how funny their friends really are.
In addition to the students, Riehl will be the evening’s emcee and bring along comedy friends Ron J. Ruhman (Forget Paris, The Improv, corporate functions & colleges across the U.S.) and special guest James P. Connolly (Sirius/XM Radio, Bob & Tom Show, Comics on Duty World Tour) to round out the evening. Opening musical guest, singer/songwriter Paul Breazeale will perform from 6:30-7:15.
This August 27 show is free at the Murray Center, and seats can be reserved online.
