Sunday Triathlon: Race Maps & Street Closures

by MissionViejoDispatch.com on September 24, 2008

The Orange County International Triathlon, sponsored by Mazda, comes to Mission Viejo Sunday.  The private organizers expect over 700 participants.

Triathletes will be started in groups, with the elite performers first.  The Olympic length event will begin with a rectangular 1-mile swim around Lake Mission Viejo.  Athletes will exit at the boat dock, mount their bicycles, and head onto Olympiad Rd and down Marguerite Parkway toward El Toro Rd on a 24-mile ride.  They will continue into Santiago Canyon where the route reverses back to Lake Forest and Mission Viejo.  The cyclists abandon the bikes for the running segment at Marguerite and El Toro Rd, proceeding mostly along biking and hiking trails for 6 miles to the 1984 Olympic finish line on Olympiad Rd near the entrance to Lake Mission Viejo.

Following are links to the Triathlon course maps:

In the 1980’s Mission Viejo hosted one of the premier triathlons in the western United States.  The event was discontinued because the route became impractical as population and traffic increased in the area.  The new route is expected to minimize inconvenience to traffic.

The event starts at 7 am and should conclude by 11 am.  Street closures are:

  • Marguerite Parkway: La Barca to El Toro Rd. from 7:00 to 8:30 am
  • Marguerite Parkway: Vista del Lago to La Barca from 5:30-11:00 am
  • Los Alisos Blvd: Novena to Entidad from 8:30-10:30 am
  • Olympiad Road: Melinda Rd to Marguerite from 5:30-noon (note: Melinda Rd. to entrance to Lake MV will remain opened to athletes and lake members.)
