Ten years ago this week, on September 21, 1998, 38-year-old Florence Joyner was found dead in her bedroom in Mission Viejo. The Olympic celebrity held both the 100 and 200 meter records.
The death resulted in shock and intrigue as different theories arose. Initially a murder investigation was launched due to early evidence of strangulation. A month-long coroner’s autopsy found the death was caused by an epileptic seizure.
Speculation that the condition may have been linked to drugs or steroid use were never resolved because the coroner determined there was not sufficient biological material for accurate testing.
Flo-Jo established a reputation for fashion with her long finger nails, jewelry and colorful attire. She was beloved around the world.
Mission Viejo dedicated a new park on Olympiad Road to her, erecting a statute and naming the park in her honor. On May 20, 2002 the dedication was attended by 1,000 local admirers.

At present Flo Jo Park does not do true honor to Florence Joyner because of potential health hazards, especially to children, from power lines at the park. The Southern California Edison Viejo System Project emits EMF levels well above what were in the Final Mitigated Negative Declaration accepted by the California Public Utilities Commission in May of 2004.
These facts were proved and reinforced by the findings of Sage and Associates in their report to the city of Mission Viejo. The city formed an Ad Hoc Committee to take actions about this high levels of EMF in Flo Jo Park and the other Mission Viejo parks where these high levels of EMF have been recorded. Frank Ury was selected to head this Ad Hoc Committee. It has been over 1 year since this committee was formed–to date NO report to the public and no action on the issue. Just what is Frank Ury covering up–or is his inaction driven by campaign fund raising.????
Mayor Trish Kelley and Frank Ury are well aware of the potential cancer from these power lines lines–yet NO warning signs in Flo Jo or our other parks along this “cancer corridor” have been posted. Some say the large campaign contributions by Southern California Edison are the reason for the Mayor and Mayor Pro Temps lack of action.
The voters have a choice in November to retire Frank Ury—I would highly suggest they send Mr. Ury down to ignominious defeat in the November election. Then the next person to be sent home is Mayor Trish Kelley.
Shame on Trish Kelley and Frank Ury and the rest of our city council for their lack of action to protect our toddlers, children, pregnant mothers, and others that use our city parks.
