Council Opposes Measure H

by MissionViejoDispatch.com on September 8, 2010

On Tuesday evening the City Council unanimously passed a resolution opposing Measure H. The Initiative will be on the November ballot proposing to change the method of election for Capistrano School Board trustees.

Currently CUSD trustees are elected at-large and answer to all voters in the District.  Measure H would cause voters to elect a single trustee from one of seven segregated areas.  Mission Viejo is the largest city in the District, but would be splintered into three areas.

Trustee Ellen Addonizio spoke to the council to express her opposition to H. Residents Robert Reidel and Julie Collier also spoke against the Initiative.  There were no speakers favoring Measure H.

Critics of H complain voters would lose 6 votes if it is passed.  Some families with children in different schools across two or more areas are concerned they could not vote for the trustee representing a school where one or more of their children attend.

It is also relevant to not forget about the proportional number of voters in each Mission Viejo Trustee Area. Mission Viejo constituents, being the minority in all three of the Trustee areas, can be outvoted and unrepresented even by their own Trustee.

By voting At-Large, at least it’s a level playing field and the same for all constituents within the district.

Vote NO on Measure H

I just wanted to offer my thanks to the Mission Viejo City Council for seeing the issues as they actually exist regarding this poorly thought out effort. I firmly agree with their decision to approve a resolution to oppose Measure H.

I am hopeful that the other City Councils in the area will be bold enough to take up this issue, learn the merits and find the same backbone that MV has shown.

Please make sure to mark your ballots NO on Measure H.
