Grand Jury Asked to Investigate MV City Hall

by MissionViejoDispatch.com on October 7, 2008

A formal request has been filed with the OC District Attorney and Grand Jury for an investigation into alleged improper political activity by City Hall.  A copy of the complaint was also filed with the Fair Political Practices Commission, according to local resident Connie Lee.  She made the announcement at the Council meeting last night.

    The complaint alleges:

  • The Heritage Committee, an official City committee appointed by the City Council, invited a single council candidate to its September 3 meeting and conducted a one-candidate forum for the purpose of assisting the campaign of Richard Atkinson, who is sponsored by Mayor Kelley and Mayor Pro Tem Frank Ury.
  • That on September 9 Mr. Atkinson told the Orange County Republican Party Endorsing Committee that he had been endorsed by Mission Viejo’s City Staff.
  • That on October 3 a non-profit organization, Mission Viejo Cell Out, was denied rental of a public meeting room at City Hall or the Library, and the denial was intended to prevent the free speech of those who might not favor the status quo at City Hall.  The City has previously rented meeting rooms to political organizations and other groups for political purposes.
