Lynn Hatton announced at Newhart Middle School this morning that she is a candidate for the Capo Board of Trustees. Hatton resides in Mission Viejo and would represent that Trustee Area, although she will run at-large on the ballots of all voters in the Capistrano District. She is not running for one of the two recall seats.
Hatton is the owner of a tutoring and mentoring firm, Adelante Educational Services, which provides one-on-one and small group academic tutoring, CAHSEE, CST, SAT and ACT support, study skills and leadership building and college admissions workshops. The firm has locations in Arizona, Louisiana and Illinois, in addition to Southern California.
She lists her leadership experience as School Site Council, PTA President, San Diego CAHSEE (California High School Exit Exam) Roundtable, State Superintendent Inaugural Committee and a State Educational Technology Committee.
The candidate says her primary focus will be increasing college accessibility for students and improving communication among stakeholders. She didn’t want to reveal her positions on social issues like gay rights and abortion, feeling those weren’t matters for the Board. She says she is a registered Democrat.
This morning’s press conference was arranged by Children First recall group, which selected Hatton as its candidate. CF hopes to capture at least four of the five seats up for election in November so it can oust the current reform majority on the CUSD Board of Trustees.

This is the best choice of the CF group so far. She is a good woman that is very involved with CUSD schools in Mission Viejo. However she is also running up against Larry Christensen who is probably my favorite member of the Board. He actually has a head on his shoulders, is clear and explains himself at meetings, and seems like he cares about this district. He also tends to follow the rules more and doesn’t shout or ignore public speakers that have different viewpoints (cough cough Anna Bryson). This also isn’t about power or politics for him (cough cough Ken Lopez Maddox) as he actually has kids in CUSD schools and has a job other than being a trustee. If she was running against Maddox, no doubt I would pick her, but she is running against Christensen which is going to make this a tough call for me.
Sounds great, but unfortunately increasing college accessibility for students isn’t something that she is going to be able to fix. (I wish she could.) At least in state schools their first priority is to give spots to low income minority students, then, to offset the lack of money received on those applicants they accept more out of state applicants and international students, since they pay more. This fall they are increasing those numbers even more.
That doesn’t leave a lot of space for our kids. Private school may become our only choice soon, but kids need a lot more than a public school diploma to get in to those schools. There are still community colleges though.
I fail to understand how values in all there forms, including, abortion, school prayer, and gay rights are glanced over. We live in a world where school districts are being sued by gay activists so that students can bring their “partners” to the prom . . . a Nation where the word “Christian” is associated with “intolerance” and “Muslim” is “inclusive” by left-leaning teachers . . . a Country where Planned Parenthood is allowed to speak on campus and encourages students not to tell their parents about abortions.
I’m sure Ms. Hatton is a great person. But there can only be one reason for not disclosing the answers to values based questions. Fear of them being outside the mainstream, impacting electability.
Lets all remember that “Children First” is also the very same group that is promoting Gary Pritchard – A far left activist who compares Barry Gordy to Martin Luther King in his class room, and who cried during Obama’s inaugural speech. At least that’s what his wife said on her blog on the Daily Kos.
Anyone that Children First promotes should be automatically suspect and everyone should be skeptical of them until they are a little more open about their values.
She sounds great. So glad these wonderful people live in our community and are willing and able to step up to the plate. Encouraging to say the least.
Lynn Hatton sounds like the right person for the job. Her experience could meet the challenges of this position.
I feel for her. Really feel for her. My heart is with her. Vote Lynn
