The re-assignment of students from the closed O’Neill Elementary to De Portola School caused the City to approve safety improvements at De Portola. The action was spurred by parents who noted the increase in pedestrian and vehicular traffic was the cancellation by SVUSD of student bus service to De Portola.
Last week the City authorized a new crossing guard at the school and the striping of three crosswalks in conjunction with new signage. The estimated cost is $15,319. The map illustrates the improvements.

As a result of closing O’Neill, it should have been obvious there would be increased traffic going to de Portola due to the fact that most of the O’Neill students transferred there before the end of May. If in fact there had been any communication inititated by SVUSD with the city, this safety issue could’ve been dealt with in a much more timely manner. I would hope that with the closing of more schools throughout both SVUSD and Capo, that district officials will accept it is their responsibility to communicate their intentions well in advance with city officials of schools affected by closure, to see that safer routes to schools are configured ahead of time thus reducing time for crosswalks/crossing guards to be actually implemented in those potentially dangerous areas.
