The City announced on Friday afternoon that extensive construction will begin Monday on the Avery interchange to the freeway.
The purpose is to widen Avery under the freeway to add additional travel lanes accessing the on and off ramps. The work will be inside the Cal-Trans right-of-way, but street striping will be done inside MV on Marguerite to facilitate the construction.
Work requiring multiple lane closures is supposed to occur at night so that traffic impacts will be reduced. The project will take several months, with completion expected by Thanksgiving.

Wow. What joy for the 1,500+ Mission Viejo students and parents of Capistrano Valley High School who already have to deal with the Crown Valley/Marguerite intersection. I agree that something needs to be done at the interchange there, but I pray it doesn’t take as long as the Crown Valley/Marguerite intersection has taken (delay, delay, delay). For CVHS students and parents, taking the freeway from Avery to La Paz, Oso, and Alicia has become a very popular alternative to passing through the Marguerite/Crown Valley nightmare to reach the majority of the schools residents in area like Pacific Hills, Calafia, the lake communities, Canyon Crest, Mission Ridge, etc….
All well. I just hope this construction goes fast because even with the “improvements” at Crown Valley/Marguerite, it still remains a total nightmare and now the freeway alternative will be one as well.
The report states that the road improvement will be completed by Thanksgiving…but did not say what year!!

If Caltrans is the contractor on this job, it may well be completed by Thanksgiving of this year. If the city is the contractor as it was for the CVP project, Diane’s concern may be a very real one.
Richard grieves for the unfortunate northern Mission Viejo CVHS parents who, to avoid the CVP/Marguerite intersection now to lessen their inconvenience, use the freeway. Doing so only exacerbates the problem at the Avery/Marguerite/I-5 intersection.
There is no concern on the part of the city or the administration of Saddleback College (who is a major contributor to the traffic problems in the southern portion of the city) for the residents of the 450 Coronado homes east of Marguerite Parkway whose ONLY ingress and egress to their homes is through the Marguerite/Avery Parkway. Many have come to selecting the times when the must leave their tract to minimize the serious conjestion at that intersection.
Seven years ago, the city was presented with a number of alternative plans to alleviate the traffic in the southern section of our city. For whatever reasons, lack of finances, gumption, vision, or sense of urgency, or whatever, the city did nothing except spend money on a report. Oh, yes, they did foreclose on one cost effective and practicable option by opting to allow for yet one more botique car dealership(and of course, the all important tax revenue) rather than preserving the land to be used for a solution to the traffic conjestion and the Avery/Marguerite intersection.
